Synopsis
Synopsis of Brand-New Noh Staging “Nohgaku Quest”
A traveler from China arrives in the Toshima district of Musashino Province. The lively streets of Toshima bustle with young people from many different provinces chatting with one another. The Chinese traveler explains that the Tang dynasty capital Chang’an has prospered under the virtuous rule of the Emperor and his consort Yang Guifei, but is now suffering from the curse of a god of pestilence.
When the traveler drifts off to sleep, a benevolent deity, the fox spirit Inari, appears in his dream, and promises to aid the Emperor and Yang Guifei in Chang’an with the divine power of the famous sword Kogitsune-maru (“Little Fox”).
*****
This performance of Ikebukuro Takigi Noh (torch lit Noh) with the theme “Nohgaku Quest” is aimed at making the joys of classical culture accessible to more people.
Based on a previous trial performance of omnibus-style Noh in Singapore and last year’s “Re:Quest” performance at Yarai Noh Theater in Kagurazaka, we have created a new Noh production set in Xi’an (the former Chang’an), which has a relationship with Toshima City as a Culture City of East Asia. Thrills abound in this omnibus-style production interspersed throughout with classic Noh plays such as Matsumushi (“The Pine Cricket”), Kokaji, Kotei, Yang Guifei, and Shakkyo.
